About Us

About Us

Our markets were created out of our family's love and passion for delicious, healthy foods and inspired by families looking for a place where they'd love to shop and be proud to call their own. The flow of our markets is designed to be easy and convenient. The environment is relaxed and well organized. It's the kind of place you'll feel comfortable running into for a quick gift or a forgotten item. Most importantly, it's a place where you can shop at your own pace, mingle freely with staff and friends, and discover something new each time you visit.

Whether it's your first time shopping with us or you've been a loyal customer for years, we promise to always do our best to make you feel like family.

Our Story

Just over 40 years ago in 1983, Jim Kowalski was working for Red Owl and took note of their store on Grand Avenue that seemed to be underperforming. Together with his wife Mary Anne, their life savings and a loan from a friend, they decided to take a ride down the grocery aisle.

Our Civic Business Approach

Kowalski's is a civic business guided by democratic principles and standards. While achieving our business goals, we are also building the infrastructure needed to sustain democracy. We believe in human capacity and place a very high emphasis on the training and development of our stakeholders.

Our Team

We believe in exceeding expectations and giving customers a sensational shopping experience each time they visit any of our stores. That means investing in employees who are the best in their field.

Departments

Our goal for 40 years has been to continually surpass your expectations by offering you items you won't find anywhere else and friendly, knowledgeable service in our departments. Discover an unrivaled selection of fresh foods, local products, specialty gifts and fresh floral around our markets.

Local Partners

When we opened our doors back in 1983, we knew that a big part of our focus would be on supporting local growers, businesses and nearby communities. We've had the privilege to help launch and foster many area businesses, which has led to a growing number of lifelong relationships.

Our Awards

Thanks to the support of our loyal customers, we've been fortunate to receive many awards over the years. We're grateful to all of you who are proud to call Kowalski's your neighborhood market. That's the best award we could ever receive!

Charitable Giving

The Joy of Good Food may be our passion, but Kowalski's is more than just a grocery store – we're your neighbors, too. We're proud to be active in the communities we serve and are always excited to partner with local organizations in their fundraising efforts.

Environmental Programs

We share this beautiful planet, and we need to work together to protect it! Here are a few of the ways Kowalski's is working to manage food waste and trash along with some ways you can implement earth-friendly practices at home.

We're WBENC Certified

We're proud to be a women-owned business! Kowalski's owner Mary Anne Kowalski and CEO Kris Kowalski Christiansen are constantly working to improve the grocery industry and local communities through their civic leadership.
